Resist or perish! Understanding the mode of resistance among young DIY Indonesian musicians

This article examines the practice of resistance among young DIY musicians in Yogyakarta, Indonesia context post-reform era. negotiate how to provide for their everyday economic needs while also upholding music genre’s spirit against market commodification. Lately, commodification not only comes from industry but state through neoliberal-oriented creative economy policies. Music falls into category a sector and is seen as product boost growth. Based on our empirical data, resist this practices scene. We show struggle sustain musical values authenticity (otentisitas) autonomy (kemandirian). Instead viewing homogenous, we observed three modes resistance: rookie, in-between, afficionado, based level commitment being careerist.
